If the environment gets very cold, the animals with thick fur are more likely to survive because they stay warmer. They will have babies with thick fur, passing on this trait. Over time, most of the animals in the group will have thick fur because those are the ones that survived and had babies. This process is natural selection, where traits that help animals survive become more common in a population.
